About the Conference

The Purple Angels Dementia Care Conference is for anyone interested in learning more about Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias...but it is specifically focused on family caregivers. Insightful presentations by experienced caregivers (who understand because they've “been there”) will provide information and strategies to ease the burden of caregiving.

Conference Presentations

10 THINGS EVERY CAREGIVER NEEDS TO KNOW
ABOUT DEMENTIA

Doug Seubert, MPH, CDP
As a nationally certified dementia practitioner, and more importantly as a caregiver for his mother, Margaret, who had dementia, Doug has discovered a list of 10 things every caregiver needs to know. This insightful presentation will provide a foundation for the conference and highlight strategies that can ease the burden of caregiving.

ABC’S OF A FAMILY DEALING WITH DEMENTIA
Kathy Gessert, Annette Woller, Abby Woller, Emma Woller
Join one family’s journey as three generations worked together to care for their dad / grandpa / great-grandpa. They will discuss the ups and downs of caregiving and provide helpful pointers on caring for someone with dementia.

MY TWO ELAINES: LEARNING, COPING, AND SURVIVING AS AN ALZHEIMER'S CAREGIVER
Gov. Martin J. Schreiber
Former governor of Wisconsin Marty Schreiber will share lessons from his journey as a caregiver for his wife, Elaine, who has Alzheimer's disease. He will candidly describe his challenges and missteps and highlight how compassion and humor provide comfort for both the caregiver and the loved one living with dementia. The discussion will include details from his award-winning book, My Two Elaines: Learning, Coping, and Surviving as an Alzheimers Caregiver. Schreiber has become an advocate for Alzheimer’s caregivers and has spent the last few years working to improve support services. He helped the Alzheimer’s Association launch Operation Stronger Together in 2015, and he has been recognized with various regional and state awards for his work.

Everyone attending the conference will receive a complementary copy of the book, My Two Elaines: Learning, Coping, and Surviving as an Alzheimer’s Caregiver. After his presentation, Governor Schreiber and co-author Cathy Breitenbucher will be on hand to answer questions and sign books.

These complementary copies have been donated by the family of Marvin Michalski. Net proceeds from the sales of My Two Elaines are used to promote Alzheimer’s caregiver support programs.

Free Respite Care

Marshfield Area Purple Angels hosts a monthly memory café on the first Thursday of each month. The dementia care conference is planned for the same day and at the same location. A safe, engaging space will be provided throughout the day for those who have dementia. This will allow more caregivers the opportunity to attend the conference presentations. Additional paperwork and registration will be required for respite care on the day of the conference. Please arrive early to complete the registration.

Thank You to Our Donors and Volunteers

This conference is only possible thanks to a generous donation in memory of Marvin Michalski. Free respite care is possible through a donation in memory of Gerald Kohl. We also thank the presenters and the many volunteers who donated their time and talent to make this conference a reality.
